Description:

With over twenty volumes, the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers is a momentous achievement. Originally gathered by Philip Schaff, the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers is a collection of writings by classical and medieval Christian theologians. The purpose of such a collection is to make their writings readily available. The entire work is divided into two series, each with fourteen volumes. The second series focuses on a variety of important Church Fathers, ranging from the fourth century to the eighth century. Several works of St. Ambrose are collected in this volume. Along with St. Gregory the Great, St. Jerome, and St. Augustine, St. Ambrose is considered one of the original Doctors of the Church. He played an important role in the conversion of St. Augustine. The Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers are comprehensive in scope, and provide keen translations of instructive and illuminating texts from some of the great theologians of the Christian church. These spiritually enlightening texts have aided Christians for over a thousand years, and remain instructive and fruitful even today!

From the Back Cover

The Council of Nicaea in 325 AD marked the beginning of a new era in Christianity. For the first time, doctrines were organized into a single creed. The Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers did most of their writing during and after this important event in Church history. This second series from the Nicene and Post-Nicene era contains a variety of works from a number of important writers.

In Volume X of the 14-volume collected writings of the Nicenes and Post-Nicenes (first published between 1890 and 1900), readers will find the works of Saint Ambrose, one of the four original doctors of the Western Church. This honor is given only to those whose teachings forever changed and improved the Catholic Church. Included in this volume are "On the Duties of the Clergy," "On the Holy Spirit," "On the Decease of His Brother Satyrus," "Exposition of the Christian Faith," "On the Mysteries," "Concerning Repentance," "Concerning Virgins," "Concerning Widows," and a collection of the saint's most important letters.

Saint Augustine was greatly influenced by Ambrose's writing, crediting them, in part, with his conversion.
